I love meMost people associate February as the month of love, mainly because of Valentines Day. However, I believe February is the month of self-care: love of yourself, friends and family, and for others.

January was a whirlwind and buzzing with words like “resolutions”, goals, and to-do lists. Not only can February be the month of love but it can also be the month of self-love.

We all need to take time to make sure we treat ourselves well, whatever that might look like for you (massage, facial, pampering, exercise, shopping, a nap, vacation, dancing, lunchtime walks, yoga, etc). Taking care of yourself mentally and physically should be a priority. It’s like when you are in an airplane and you’re listening to the emergency procedures “Please put on your oxygen mask first before aiding someone else”.

Being present in your own life before you’re able to assist another person (either your family or friends or at work or in your own business) is vital. If your health is faltering, then you won’t be able to help others. Clients and co-workers will respond better by you modeling that behavior, especially if you are in a position of leadership or power.

Here are some ideas to take care of you:

Go to bed an hourly early one-day a week (or more)

Drink water whenever you feel sluggish

Start a monthly dinner group with your girlfriends

Read a book or that article you haven’t found time for yet

Schedule a technology-free day with your child

Be specific defining personal vs. professional time

Learn to say “no” so you don’t stretch yourself thin

Meditate

Write in a journal

Watch your favorite television show

Do whatever you need to do to take care of YOU!
It’s ok to be selfish.

I proclaim February the month of YOU.
Be kind, not only to others, but also to yourself as well.
