Project Share Day 3: HOCKEY, hockey, hockey
I was fortunate to meet my good friend Lauren in 1997, my first year living in Los Angeles. She introduced me (and enhanced) many of my favorite pursuits (wine & sushi at the top)… and HOCKEY!
Her teams: Red Wings & Capitals (home town); Me: NJ Devils
I was in my 20s and I watched hockey before (I even made it to the 1995 NJ Devils Stanley Cup Champions Parade at Brendan Byrne arena parking lot, which is a blur of streamers, screaming, and so many people). This time around I LOVE LOVE LOVE the game. I’m listening intently to the commentators Chico & Doc and I’m watching the stats. I’m watching games all the time and I mean all the time. I’m yelling at the TV and in the stands.
I can feel the ice when I walk into an arena, my heart beats faster as I sit in my seat awaiting the game to begin. The electricity around me is buzzing. The sound of their blades on the ice is comforting. I actually watch hockey to relax and it helps me fall asleep.
My favorite player is Martin Brodeur. I love goalies. To have such confidence when fast moving pucks are aimed for your head is trust and courage. Marty and I also share the same birthday, May 6. His skill on the ice is amazing to witness. I would love to meet him one day.
I have many signed memorabilia, from Devils players, Jim Craig (Olympics 1980), and others. When the NHL lockout happened in ’04-05, Lauren and I watched AHL games. We went to the Staples Center to see the Manchester Monarchs play (many players from this team moved to the winning LA Kings in later years), including Ithaca native Dustin Brown (my alma mater). I have a signed stick from that team in my apartment and I look at it every day. It makes my heart happy and brings a smile to my face.
I really could go on, and on, and on… so happy that September is coming up for the pre-season. Anyone want to head to MSG or Barclay’s center, message me!
