It’s time… Your young adult is now off to college. His/Her room will now be vacant. What will you do?
Depending on your personal circumstances and beliefs one of three options are available.
- Take back the room and reclaim your space
- Keep it as is and let it remain in their control
- Do something in between
My friend’s parents changed her room into a gym and guest room as soon as she graduated high school. Another friend had her room go to her younger sister. Luckily for me, my room has stayed “my room” since we moved into the house 27 years ago. It was a belief my mother had and continues to have as her children are grown. I’m sure that will change when they move in a few years.
If you decide to follow option 1, here are 3 tips to help you reclaim your space.
1. What is the plan for this room? What will it become?
Parents take back rooms to create a workout room, a den or guest room, or an office. Once you have a plan in place you must then prepare the room for change.
2. Decide what to do with the items in the room.
The best way to pack up a child’s room when they go off to college is carefully! No, seriously the best way would be to have the child help with the process. When I went to college I was told to pack up my breakables so it was easier for my Mom to clean.
Starting the process early is key and breaking up the tasks (over time) is best. Bring a few empty boxes at the start of summer and label them (clearly)… A few ideas for labels:
- Donate
- Bring to college
- Give to friend, relative, sibling, etc
- Pack for storage
- Trash
When your young adult sees items intended for a category, they can add the items to the box; slowly over time and at their own pace. In addition to packing the room, it will help them pack for school.
3. Change the décor.
If you have the funds, many like to fix the decor to match the personality that the new room will become. This can include a paint job, new furniture, and new carpet, but many times a fresh coat of paint is all you need.
Whatever option you choose, having a clear plan is essential. It would also be good to have an arrangement for when your college son/daughter returns home for a visit. Where will they sleep? How will they feel that their room has been changed?
Remember to enjoy the new room and use it as needed.
